Embracing Black Diversity And Inclusion Forum
The "Embracing Black Diversity and Inclusion Forum," held on April 27, 2025, at Trem Toronto Church in Brampton, was a powerful discussion on anti-Black racism. Organized by NCCEEP and Welcome Home African Community Services, with sponsorship from the Government of Canada, the event featured a vibrant display of Nigerian traditional drumming and a captivating dance performance by a children's group.
The auditorium was beautifully decorated with fabrics, artworks, and artifacts showcasing the rich cultural heritage of Africa, with pieces from different regions, including West Africa, as well as African-influenced art from countries like Brazil and Cuba.
The evening began with a soulful performance by a talented saxophonist and keyboardist, who played African melodies that set the tone for a meaningful evening.
The panel discussion, featuring Dr. Akande Akinwale, K. Ann Thomas, Victor Ogbodo, and Solomon Kobina Aremu, shed light on systemic racism, tracing its deep-rooted history and impact on society. The interactive session encouraged audience participation, fostering a thoughtful debate.
Keynote speakers emphasized the importance of speaking out against racism. The founder of NCCEEP highlighted the government's commitment to combating racism, while Madan Ngozi, Publisher of the Nigerian Canadian News and CEO of Welcome Home African Community Services, pledged to continue using her platforms to fight anti-Black racism.
The forum concluded with a call to action, emphasizing the need for visibility, representation, collaboration, and seizing opportunities to dismantle racism. The event was expertly interpreted into French by Ms. Farid N. Audu, and MC Niyi Adegboyega kept the program engaging with his insightful analysis and witty humor. This was part of a larger initiative with events taking place in other Ontario cities.
